Understanding Chron's Disease and Nutrition to Help

What is Chron's disease?

A chronic inflammatory bowel disease that affects the lining of the digestive tract. Common symtoms include diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, and fatigue.


Phases of Chron's:


Phase 1: Phase when you are experiencing flare ups or bleeding. At this stage, you may not be able to tolerate much food but texture is key. This phase includes blended, soft-cooked foods.

  • Phase 1 Foods include:
  • Smoothies
  • Pureed Vegetables
  • Pureed soups
  • Yogurt
  • Miso soup
  • Ground meat and fish
  • Well cooked oats


Phase 2: This phase consists of introducing more foods and textures. When your symptoms have improved significantly but may not completely gone away. You may be able to add more fiber into your diet but can have a hard time digesting foods very high in fat or fiber.

  • Phase 2 foods include:
  • Well cooked lean meat and poultry
  • Soft greens like butter greens
  • Nut butters
  • Tomatoes
  • Baked goods using gluten free flour such as banana bread or corn muffins
  • Pureed berries with seeds strained


Phase 3: Remission phase, where you are more comfortable eating more variety of foods. The phase when your bowel movements are solid and well controlled.

  • Phase 3 foods include:
  • Citrus fruits
  • Stir-fried meat and vegetables
  • Whole beans
  • Shellfish


Foods to avoid altogether:

  • Trans fat
  • Emulsifiers (carrageenan, maltodextrin)
  • Refined sugar
  • Grains, except for oats & barley
  • Fast food & Processed food
  • Milk & fresh cheese
